The most famous of Italian Red Wines come from Piedmont and Tuscany and are some of the best wines in the world, from the fruit friendly Barbera which is what the Piedmontese locals drink while they wait for their Barolos and Barbarescos to age. Both Barolo and Barbaresco are made with 100% Nebbiolo and are required to age in oak and in the bottle before being released, but will, in most vintages, still need 10+ years before enjoying the balance of the fruits and tannins. Brunello di Montalcino is one of my all-time favorite wines, still selling at a reasonable price. Made with 100% Sangiovese, it is also required to age in oak for at least two years and you don’t have to wait too long to enjoy the aromas and layers of flavor.

About Kevin Zraly

Kevin Zraly has built an impressive wine and restaurant career over the past five decades. He was the Cellar Master and Wine Director of Windows on the World Restaurant atop One World Trade Center from 1976 – 2001. He is the founder and instructor of the Windows on the World Wine School that has graduated over 20,000 students to date. Kevin is the author of eight books, including the largest selling wine book in the United States, Kevin Zraly's Windows on the World Complete Wine Course, (4 million copies). Kevin is the recipient of the 2011 James Beard Lifetime Achievement Award and is a member of the Board of Trustees at the Culinary Institute of America. He is also the recipient of the Wine Literary Award (2006), and the European Wine Council Lifetime Achievement Award (2002).
