Winemaker Notes

Crafted from our most effusive barrels, Black Label makes a return with generosity and intrigue. Blackberries, black cherries, olives, and toasted cocoa command the nose. Ripe black mission figs, wild blueberries, black currants and kirsch tones transform the palate. Generous rounded fruit tannins resound, whirling along the palate with hints of subtle yet impressive French oak through its endless finish, beckoning the next sip.

Blend: 97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Lagrein

While the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label may not offer all the floral fireworks of the Leopoldina Vineyard bottling, it showcases admirable depth and purity of cassis and black cherry fruit. It's full-bodied, perhaps a bit more powerful, richer and more tannic, with hints of mocha and cigar box as well. Long and sultry on the finish, it picks up extra complexity in the form of salted licorice, black olives and earth.

I loved the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label, and it’s certainly a standout in the vintage. Beautifully ripe darker fruits, chocolate, leafy herbs, and some spicy oak all define the aromatics, and it’s rich on the palate, with a layered, textured mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish.

A frank and rich expression of Oakville cabernet with hints of coffee and chocolate to the blackberries and violets. Ripe, yet fresh, with roasted spices to the rich fruit on the full-bodied palate. Nicely chewy and structured. Well done for the vintage. Better from 2024.

In the Spring of 1993 California publisher, Patrick O'Dell, purchased Johnson Turnbull Vineyards and renamed the property Turnbull Wine Cellars. The remodeling and expansion of the facility has been completed. In addition, the wines have gone through change due to the inclusion of fruit from additional vineyards purchased by Patrick. Turnbull Wine Cellars has 145 acres of vineyards within the Oakville and Calistoga districts of Napa Valley representing a diverse range of microclimates and terroirs within these fabled grape-growing centers of Napa Valley.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
