Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The 2019 Dundee Hills Pinot Noir displays classic Oregon characteristics of both primary fruit and earth-driven notes. In glass, the wine is ruby in color. On the nose, notes of fresh cedar and allspice are met by dark chocolate and violet. With a focused entry, this wine is supported by juicy acidity and dense chewy tannins. Umami, savory wild mushroom with notes of Rainier cherry and spruce tips roll over the mid-palate followed by a lingering pop of vanilla bean on the finish.

COMMENTARY: The 2019 Twomey Dundee Hills Pinot Noir is bright and sassy. TASTING NOTES: This wine excels with compelling aromas and flavors of red fruit, mineral notes, and wild berries. Pair it with grilled salmon fillets. (Tasted: May 22, 2022, San Francisco, CA)

From the Family of Silver Oak Founded in 1999 by the Duncan Family of Silver Oak, Twomey combines experience and a sense of curiosity with the exploration of expressive vineyards for its wines—made to be savored with family and friends. Twomey pursues and sustainably farms sites from Central Coast California to the Willamette Valley in Oregon that reveal a delicate balance between site-specificity and classic regional characteristics.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

Home of the first Pinot noir vineyard of the Willamette Valley, planted by David Lett of Eyrie Vineyard in 1966, today the Dundee Hills AVA remains the most densely planted AVA in the valley (and state). To its north sits the Chehalem Valley and to its south, runs the Willamette River. Within the region’s 12,500 acres, about 1,700 are planted to vine on predominantly basalt-based, volcanic, Jory soil.
