Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

This lovely Pinot Noir opens with an intriguingly spicy aroma. Lush black cherry notes on the palate follow through, and aging in French oak barrels contribute to a long finish with notes of vanilla and coconut. The tannins are soft, but the rich, full body of this wine enable it to complement even a hearty dish. This 2019 Pinot Noir was aged in 60-gallon oak barrels for 14 months using 20% new French oak with a medium-plus toast.

This smooth and well-balanced wine offers delicious black-cherry and blackberry flavors, mild tannins and a good dash of fruit acidity for a refreshing texture. It's a great value, and will be a crowd pleaser, versatile for multiple occasions. Made with certified organic grapes.

Barra of Mendocino, California
All BARRA of Mendocino and Girasole Vineyards wines are made from 100% estate grown, certified organic grapes. We believe that the combination of our organic viticulture practices, coupled with our unique geographic location in the Mendocino appellation, helps us craft premium wines that are truly representative of their roots. We hope you enjoy the end results in the bottle as much as we've enjoyed creating it.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

A large and diverse appellation within California’s North Coast AVA, Mendocino is home to several smaller sub-regions—most notably the Anderson Valley. This scenic region, with rolling hills covered in redwood forests as well as vineyards, is one of the world’s top producers of certified organically-grown grapes. Due to wide geographical and climatic variation, a vast array of wine styles can be found here.
