Winemaker Notes

Calcu Gran Reserva Cabernet Franc has an intense red, bright and velvety color. The nose is full of an expression marked by fresh berries and hints of flowers. On the palate it presents a great body with good balance, elegant tannic structure, and a long, fresh and fruity finish.

Professional Ratings

  • 91

The 2018 Gran Reserva Cabernet Franc was produced with a new variety on the property, planted more recently and complemented by 6% Carmenere and 4% Petit Verdot. It matured in French barrique for one year. It's varietal, clean and pure, herbal and spicy, with good balance and integration of the oak. It has pungent flavors and fine tannins.

Calcu Winery Video

Rodrigo Romero is the winemaker of an exciting line of small production wines made for everyday drinking but far more interesting and distinctive than most in its category. Calcu, which means "magician" in the local Mapuche language, was created to emphasize the diversity of Chile’s Colchagua Valley with most of the estate fruit coming from the family’s cool Marchigüe vineyard.

Cabernet Franc, a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon, is the subtler and more delicate of the Cabernets. Today Cabernet Franc produces outstanding single varietal wines across the wine-producing world. Somm Secret—One of California's best-kept secrets is the Happy Canyon appellation of Santa Barbara. Here Cabernet Franc shines as a single varietal wine or in blends, expressing sumptuous fruit, savory aromas and polished tannins.

Colchagua Valley Wine

Rapel Valley, Chile

View all products

Well-regarded for intense and exceptionally high quality red wines, the Colchagua Valley is situated in the southern part of Chile’s Rapel Valley, with many of the best vineyards lying in the foothills of the Coastal Range.

Heavy French investment and cutting-edge technology in both the vineyard and the winery has been a boon to the local viticultural industry, which already laid claim to ancient vines and a textbook Mediterranean climate.

The warm, dry growing season in the Colchagua Valley favors robust reds made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Malbec and Syrah—in fact, some of Chile’s very best are made here. A small amount of good white wine is produced from Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
