Winemaker Notes

The final wine is light in color with fruity aromas of intense green apple. The palate is pleasant and long with an excellent acid freshness.

The 2018 Mercurey 1er Cru La Mission Blanc is also attractive, delivering notes of pear, orange oil, green apple and pastry cream. Medium bodied, mineral and lively, it isn't as concentrated as the fine 2017 rendition, but it makes up for that with immediacy and charm.

The lush, viscous texture sets the stage for peach, lemon pie and citronella flavors, wrapped in a bow of baking spices. Fresh and refined, shows a lingering aftertaste of toasty oak.

The vineyard is officially 1.92ha of which 1.8ha is planted. This has been made in 400litre barrels with 30% new oak. Golden with a lime tint. Some power to the bouquet, ripe fruit but not unbalanced. The class comes in the mouth though, with swelling rich white fruit which runs through to the back. There is a touch of youthful bitterness which I never mind. Good potential.

Chateau de Chamirey, France
Built in the 17th century, the historic winery at the Château de Chamirey has been renovated in a traditional style, using high-quality, locally-made materials, including Corton stone, Burgundy oak, and aged glass and metal. In 1934, Marquis de Jouennes produced the first bottle of red Mercurey under Château de Chamirey’s name. The estate consists of 37 hectares (15 of which are Premier Cru) reflecting the diverse soils and micro climates found within the Mercurey appellation.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

Beloved for its deep and flavorful reds made of Pinot Noir, Mercurey is the largest and most important village in the Côte Chalonnaise of Burgundy with most of its vineyards tucked away in hillsides or stretched along the aptly-named “Golden Valley.” This valley, sheltered from the moist and cool air that funnels along at lower elevations, is ideal for ripening Pinot noir.

Mercurey follows strict yield laws, similar to those at the Côte d’Or village level, promoting the development of deep, full, concentrated and age-worthy Pinot noirs. In their youth, a chewy and rich structure supports flavors of ripe strawberry, raspberry and cherry. Age brings notes of underbrush, tobacco and cocoa.

While Pinot Noir claims the majority of Mercurey vineyard acreage, Chardonnay does grow here and produces uniqely floral and spicey scented white wines.
