Winemaker Notes

The Roussanne-dominant Quintessence Blanc is a chameleon of a wine and like the Viognier-based Terrasses Blanc, it demonstrates what makes the Ventoux so unique in southern France. In warmer parts of the Rhône and on red-clay soils these varieties make rich, dense wines with plenty of alcohol and texture. In the chalky parts of the Ventoux and at high elevation, these same varieties show a more northern Rhone character – flowers, pit fruits, and citrus with a lively acidity and salty minerality.

Golden white with bright reflections. Complex nose mixing aromas of white flowers and exotic fruits (pineapple) and spices (safran, curry). The wine is ample and round on the palate. Rich and balanced at the same time, with a good freshness, saltiness, and a powerful aromatic intensity.

Blend: 80% Roussanne, 20% Clairette

Tight, crisp and focused, the 2015 Ventoux la Quintessence Blanc is made in a lean, crisp style and offers medium-bodied notes of buttered citrus, toast and apple blossom. Based on 80% Roussanne and 20% Clairette, it’s a straight up classy white that will keep for 3-4 years, possibly longer.

Chateau Pesquie, France
Chateau Pesquie Winery Video

Chateau Pesquié is the story of three generations of passionate winemakers. Odette and René Bastide, took over the vineyard in the beginning of the 1970’s and restructured a large part of it. They used to bring their grapes to the local Cooperative.

Edith and Paul Chaudière, René & Odette’s daughter and son-in-law, decided to give up their medical careers to take over the family estate in 1985. They traveled in many wine regions (in France, Spain, Germany, the US, etc.), became sommeliers and worked on terroir selection... This led them to create their own winery in 1990, first vintage of Château Pesquié. By then, it was one of 10 independent wineries: there are now more than 120.

Fred and Alex Chaudière, the two sons of Edith & Paul, have taken over gradually since 2003 with the firm objective to take it to the next level and show the world how amazing the Ventoux terroir is!

In the 80’s, Paul Chaudière began sustainable farming. When Alexandre & Frederic took over, they started moving to organic (first plot converted in 2007). The estate is now fully converted to organic agriculture (Ecocert).

Full-bodied and flavorful, white Rhône blends originate from France’s Rhône Valley. Today these blends are also becoming popular in other regions. Typically some combination of Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier form the basis of a white Rhône blend with varying degrees of flexibility depending on the exact appellation. Somm Secret—In the Northern Rhône, blends of Marsanne and Roussanne are common but the south retains more variety. Marsanne, Roussanne as well as Bourboulenc, Clairette, Picpoul and Ugni Blanc are typical.
