Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

This lovely, bright and cheery Sauvignon Blanc proffers tantalizing aromas of grapefruit, pineapple and gooseberry, with hints of quince. Floral notes of lemongrass and acacia are balanced with lychee and wet stone. Classily structured and elegantly styled, a veritable explosion of crisp and juicy fruit flavors burst upon the palate. Lemon chiffon, key lime pie and kiwi are accented with green apple, white nectarine and pineapple. Decisively refreshing, this wine finishes lean and clean with long lingering notes of dragon fruit, citrus and passion fruit.

The first vintage of Sauvignon Blanc from this producer is a complex and lively white wine to balance their rich red portfolio. Aromas of jalapeño, green herbs and wet cement meet with nectarine on the nose, while the zesty palate combines bell pepper, lime peel, peach and tropical fruit.

Starting with the only white I was able to taste, the 2018 Sauvignon Blanc Estate showed brilliantly, with a Bordeaux Blanc-like bouquet of lemon oil, crushed citrus, white flowers, and background oak. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and beautifully balanced, this is a stunning Sauvignon Blanc.

COMMENTARY: The 2018 Daou Sauvignon Blanc exhibits first-class flavors of this grape variety. TASTING NOTES: This wine offers beautifully-ripened aromas and flavors of ripe citrus and dried earth that would pair nicely with grilled swordfish over a bed of mixed green. (Tasted: May 1, 2019, San Francisco, CA)

DAOU Family Estates Walk with DAOU Vineyards Winery Video

Brothers Georges Daou and Daniel Daou set forth across the globe to find an unrivaled terroir for producing Cabernet Sauvignon, a quest that led them to a place of foretold greatness: DAOU Mountain in the Adelaida District of Paso Robles. DAOU Family Estates is a family owned and operated winery committed to producing collectible, world-class wine to rival the most respected appellations. Situated on a 212-acre hilltop estate in the Adelaida District of Paso Robles, this remarkable mountain was once described by André Tchelistcheff, legendary winemaking authority, as "a jewel of ecological elements."

DAOU Mountain stands alone at an elevation of 2,200 feet, rising from the heart of the Adelaida District in the rugged coastal range west of Paso Robles. The steep slopes here reach up to 56 percent, with uniform exposure to the elements across the estate. It is a terroir of power, purity, and symmetry with every natural asset necessary to pursue the perfect Cabernet Sauvignon—including calcareous clay soils that emulate Bordeaux’s Right Bank and a climate that mirrors St. Helena.

Capable of a vast array of styles, Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing variety that equally reflects both terroir and varietal character. Though it can vary depending on where it is grown, a couple of commonalities always exist—namely, zesty acidity and intense aromatics. This variety is of French provenance. Somm Secret—Along with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc is a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. That green bell pepper aroma that all three varieties share is no coincidence—it comes from a high concentration of pyrazines (herbaceous aromatic compounds) inherent to each member of the family.

Covering the Santa Lucia Range in the northwestern portion of the greater Paso Robles appellation, the Adelaida District AVA reaches from 900 feet to over 2,000 feet in elevation. The appellation does well with Rhone and Bordeaux varieties as well as Zinfandel.
