Winemaker Notes

Every year the winery has the opportunity to pull out all the stops and make the ultimate expression of Cabernet Sauvignon from David's vineyard. Sitting at over one thousand feet above sea level, these carefully selected vines give the much celebrated and highly sought-after flagship wine: Elevation 1147. Expressive and complex, much like David himself, this wine exudes everything they love about the terroir of Pritchard Hill. Always 100% single-varietal Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine simultaneously exudes power and finesse, structure and elegance, extraction and grace. Nature and nurture have once again come together to showcase one of Napa Valley’s finest expressions of this noble grape.

Professional Ratings

This gorgeous Cabernet Sauvignon from a vineyard above Lake Hennessey exhibits scents of creme de cassis, spring flowers, ink, graphite, plums and licorice. The superb aromatics are followed by a full-bodied, opulent wine with no hard edges. Still in mid-adolescence, this brilliant 2002 is an authoritative example of this great vintage for Napa Valley Cabernet. It should hit its peak in 3-5 years and last for 20-25 years thereafter.

David Arthur Vineyards was founded in 1985 by brothers David and Bob Long. Over a glass of wine, with his father, David discovered his father had purchased Napa Valley property in the late 1950s. David relocated to Napa Valley in 1977 and began to learn the wine business literally from the ground up, serving internships at Chappellet, Joseph Phelps and Schramsberg. In 1978 and 1979, David cleared the land and in 1980, planted the first grapes. David Arthur Vineyards' first vintage was the 1985 Chardonnay. The first red wine, Meritaggio, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Sangiovese, followed in 1992. In 1996, David Arthur Vineyards began producing their now renowned Elevation 1147, named one of the top Cabernets of 1997 by Wine Spectator.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
