Winemaker Notes

The Nackenheimer Rothenberg is without question the most important site at the Gunderloch estate. It yields wines of striking mineral character paired with a broad spectrum of expressive spice and fruit aromas.

The 2017 Riesling trocken Rothenberg GG is very intense and quite open on the pure and slate-driven nose that indicates perfectly matured Riesling fruit. Pure, piquant and lean on the palate yet with juicy fruit, finesse and tension, this is again a more ascetic and very mineral dry Riesling that is less exciting for hedonists—this is more for those who like a Gothic cathedral in their wine glass. The finish is linear, piquant and salty yet doesn't show much generosity in terms of fruit. Doubtlessly a long-distance runner that might get even more complex over the years in the bottle. Tasted in May 2020.

Gunderloch Winery Image
The Gunderloch estate in Nackenheim, just southwest of Frankfurt, was founded in 1890 by the banker Carl Gunderloch on the banks of the river Rhine. From the beginning, the estate was run with a strict commitment to quality. He bought top vineyard sites, including a large part of great Nackenheim Rothenberg. Since its foundation, the estate has stayed in the same family, now in its fifth generation, with Agnes and Fritz Hasselbach. It comprises 30 acres of vineyards in the towns of Nacknheim and Nierstein. The principal grape varietal is Riesling, which finds its most powerful espression in the Nackenheim Rothenberg vineyard. The combination of its steepness, exposure, soil structure and proximity to the river gives the Rothenberg vineyard the optimal microclimates for ripening its famous Rieslings.

Riesling possesses a remarkable ability to reflect the character of wherever it is grown while still maintaining its identity. A regal variety of incredible purity and precision, this versatile grape can be just as enjoyable dry or sweet, young or old, still or sparkling and can age longer than nearly any other white variety. Somm Secret—Given how difficult it is to discern the level of sweetness in a Riesling from the label, here are some clues to find the dry ones. First, look for the world “trocken.” (“Halbtrocken” or “feinherb” mean off-dry.) Also a higher abv usually indicates a drier Riesling.

Extending south from the Rheingau region to become a valley of gently rolling hills, Rheinhessen is Germany’s largest wine region. The best Rieslings of Rheinhessen, often characterized by smoky, peach and citrus aromas, come from vines grown in the red soils of the Rheinterrasse.
