Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The elegance and aromatic complexity of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, together with the opulence of Merlot and the intensity of Petit Verdot, are the main characteristics of this magnificent wine. Deep red, with shade of purple. Pervasive balsamic notes are accompanied by hints of ripe dark, black fruit and flowers in a perfect aromatic balance. Long silky and caressing, black truffles with lovely variegated complex sensations. The final is endless, elegant. A master in balance.

Professional Ratings

The blackberry and asphalt character is impressive. Full body, tight and chewy tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Big wine yet tight and pretty. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot and petit verdot.

  • 92

The Collazzi 2016 Collazzi is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc, 20% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot available in a large production of 60,000 bottles made annually. This is a balanced vintage with fresh fruit aromas of blackberry and wild cherry presented in a clear and linear manner. The wine is softly tannic and mildly structured, with good length.

  • 91

Subtle aromas of forest floor, violet and pipe tobacco mingle with a balsamic whiff of camphor in this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The elegantly structured palate offers dried cherry, cassis and star anise before a coffee bean close. Polished, fine-grained tannins provide support. Drink through 2026.

I Collazzi Villa Loggia Winery Image

Villa Collazzi is one of the most impressive estates in all of Tuscany. Set atop a hill located a few miles south of Florence on the old road to Volterra, it offers commanding views of the surrounding countryside. This architectural landmark was originally designed by Michelangelo in 1560 for his friend, Agostino Dini. It features two rows of loggias above a large courtyard enclosed on three sides and open on a fourth. The building remained incomplete for centuries until it was purchased by the Marchi family in 1933.

Wine is grown on 62 acres, while the specialized cultivation of 297 acres of olive trees produces a precious extra virgin olive oil. Collazzi is also dedicated to the raising of bees that yields a small quantity of organic honey.

Villa Collazzi is currently run by three siblings from the Marchi family. During the last decade the Marchi brothers have invested heavily in the development of Collazzi's farming business, renewing the vineyards and restructuring the cellar, with the goal of producing excellent wines.

At Collazzi the microclimate is normally warmer and drier than the surrounding area. Part of the estate lies in a natural amphitheater, with a perfect south-westerly exposure. The high amount of sun light and the high daily temperatures allow a prolonged, complete ripening of the farming products, consistently each year.

Legendary in Italy for its Renaissance art and striking landscape, Tuscany is also home to many of the country’s best red wines. Sangiovese reigns supreme here, as either the single varietal, or a dominant player, in almost all of Tuscany’s best.

A remarkable Chianti, named for its region of origin, will have a bright acidity, supple tannins and plenty of cherry fruit character. From the hills and valleys surrounding the medieval village of Montalcino, come the distinguished and age-worthy wines based on Brunello (Sangiovese). Earning global acclaim since the 1970s, the Tuscan Blends are composed solely of international grape varieties or a mix of international and Sangiovese. The wine called Vine Nobile di Montepulciano, composed of Prognolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and is recognized both for finesse and power.
