Winemaker Notes
This well-balanced Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from cooler vineyards in the southern end of the Sonoma Coast AVA. The Hi-Vista vineyard in western Carneros and the Grossi vineyard north of Petaluma contribute spice and bright tangy acidity. The Leveroni vineyard south of Sonoma contributes the unique floral character of the Sauvignon "musque" clone. The resulting blend has a bouquet of nectarine and grapefruit zest, leading to lush fruit flavors of kiwi, lime, and grapefruit. It finishes with a refreshing minerality and zesty acidity that makes it an ideal accompaniment to a wide range of soups, salads, and shellfish dishes.

Aged on the yeast sur lie for 3 months in neutral casks and 25% stainless steel fermented, the aromatics remind us of a sea breeze with scents of crisp pear. Notes of linen and laurel prickle the tongue, while Key Lime pie and grapefruit zest are surrounded by honeysuckle and jasmine.

James Suckling
An aromatic nose of apricots, peaches and Mediterranean herbs. Medium-bodied and rather concentrated and flavorful. Zesty acidity keeps the palate bright throughout. Pleasantly tart.

COMMENTARY: The 2021 Schug Sauvignon Blanc focuses excellently on this grape variety. TASTING NOTES: This wine offers aromas and flavors of dried herbs, savory spices, and tart citrus. Enjoy it with a plate of linguine and clams in a garlic-accented sauce. (Tasted: June 17, 2022, San Francisco, CA)

Founded in 1980, Schug Carneros Estate Winery is the showcase and life-long dream of one of California's most celebrated winemakers. Walter Schug's reputation blossomed during his tenure as Founding Winemaker for Joseph Phelps Vineyards in the 1970s, where he made California’s first proprietary Bordeaux-Style blend (Insignia) and legendary vineyard designated Cabernets (Backus and Eisele Vineyards).
Drawing on his long experience in the production of fine wines in both Europe and California, Walter set up his own winery with his wife Gertrud in the cool, marine climate of the Carneros Appellation. Here he could focus on the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varietals that had always been close to his heart.
Schug Carneros Estate Winery combines old world understanding and tradition with modern winemaking techniques. By using only the finest grapes available, and maintaining the best winemaking values, these wines have gained acceptance worldwide as true contemporary classics.
Capable of a vast array of styles, Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing variety that equally reflects both terroir and varietal character. Though it can vary depending on where it is grown, a couple of commonalities always exist—namely, zesty acidity and intense aromatics. This variety is of French provenance. Somm Secret—Along with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc is a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. That green bell pepper aroma that all three varieties share is no coincidence—it comes from a high concentration of pyrazines (herbaceous aromatic compounds) inherent to each member of the family.
A vast appellation covering Sonoma County’s Pacific coastline, the Sonoma Coast AVA runs all the way from the Mendocino County border, south to the San Pablo Bay. The region can actually be divided into two sections—the actual coastal vineyards, marked by marine soils, cool temperatures and saline ocean breezes—and the warmer, drier vineyards further inland, which are still heavily influenced by the Pacific but not quite with same intensity.
Contained within the appellation are the much smaller Fort Ross-Seaview and Petaluma Gap AVAs.
The Sonoma Coast is highly regarded for elegant Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and, increasingly, cool-climate Syrah. The wines have high acidity, moderate alcohol, firm tannin, and balanced ripeness.
