Winemaker Notes

Intense cherry red color with high robe and garnet rim. Medium-high intensity and stands out for its red and black fruit in perfect harmony with the spices, eucalyptus and elegant toasted from the oak barrel. Fresh, round, elegant with very ripe tannins. Long aftertaste reminiscent of the red and black fruit.

Beautiful cherry and floral aromas here that follow through to a medium body, fine tannins and a berry and light vanilla aftertaste.

Siglo Bodegas Mazanos Winery Image

Siglo wines are produced by Bodegas Manzanos. Bodegas Manzanos gives its name to the group of wineries that best represent the identity of the family Fernández de Manzanos. There are three wineries: Azagra and Haro in appellation Rioja and Campanas in appellation Navarra. In these wineries, the young team of the fifth generation of the family elaborate the quality wines that are acclaimed worldwide. Its quality is determined by its origin: their own vineyards.

Their vast area of vineyards in different locations of the appellations give them the power of playing with terroir nuances. In their wineries the exquisite elaboration process is demonstrated. In Rioja they own the emblematic and oldest winery of the appellation in Haro and their contemporary winery in Azagra, both using gravity as the principle of architecture for elaboration. Campanas is also the oldest winery in appellation Navarra. Eight years of sustained growth support these young people who win the respect and reputation of their wines day after day.

The history of Manzanos Wines is the story of a family, their effort, their perseverance and their know-how. The Fernández de Manzanos have been cultivating vineyards and producing wines for more than a century. It was exactly in 1890 when the first generation of the Fernández de Manzanos family established a small winery in Azagra with a capacity of 50,000 litres of wine. In the 40’s they inaugurated a new facility which further increased its capacity to 350,000 litres, emphasizing the value of the viticultural tradition of this area. Between the 50’s and 60’s, they consolidated their project with the creation of Bodegas Viña Marichalar, the first one belonging to the appellation Rioja, which exceeds 1.5 million litres in capacity. In the 90s, Víctor Fernández de Manzanos Pastor, from the fourth family generation, joined the family business after studying Chemical Engineering and obtaining a Master’s Degree in Viticulture and Enology by the Technical School of Agronomic Engineering from Madrid Polytechnical University . Víctor is the first member of the family with training in viticulture and enology. Víctor then built the Winery Marqués de Butrago and decided to perform his life project, the construction of Bodegas Manzanos Azagra.

Hailed as the star red variety in Spain’s most celebrated wine region, Tempranillo from Rioja, or simply labeled, “Rioja,” produces elegant wines with complex notes of red and black fruit, crushed rock, leather, toast and tobacco, whose best examples are fully capable of decades of improvement in the cellar.

Rioja wines are typically a blend of fruit from its three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, although specific sub-region (zonas), village (municipios) and vineyard (viñedo singular) wines can now be labeled. Rioja Alta and Alavesa, at the highest elevations, are considered to be the source of the brightest, most elegant fruit, while grapes from the warmer and drier, Rioja Oriental, produce wines with deep color, great body and richness.
