Winemaker Notes

Hand harvested from estate-owned vineyards in the village of Westhofen, the Spätburgunder is an elegant, classic Pinot Noir. It has a fine aroma of dark berries and herbs atop a full, yet delicate texture on the palate. Well structured and mouth filling, with a minerally acid edge that gives it a lively finish.

Professional Ratings

Lavish yet acutely balanced, Wittmann's basic-label Spätburgunder offers deep, ripe blackberry and red currant flavors off set by bristling acidity. Layers of bramble, toast and smoke add complexity to nose and palate, along with a reverberating crushed-granite finish. Framed by fine, persistent tannins, its approachable already but should show beautifully for another decade to come.

Made from pinot noir grown on limestone and farmed biodynamically, this is dark and spicy, with a black-cherry richness contrasting its cool forest-floor scents. Gravelly tannins give the flavors a steadfast grip, turning them toward licorice and plum even as the acidity keeps the wine lively. For a steak.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

Extending south from the Rheingau region to become a valley of gently rolling hills, Rheinhessen is Germany’s largest wine region. The best Rieslings of Rheinhessen, often characterized by smoky, peach and citrus aromas, come from vines grown in the red soils of the Rheinterrasse.
