The red rocky soil of this north-facing site originates from high in the Vaca Mountains. St. Eden, which appeared first in the 2001 vintage, reliably shows great focus, an opulent "sweet" center and notes of crème de cassis, dark chocolate, and roasted herbs. Mineral-tinged and broad on the palate, the wine consistently displays fine-grained tannins and a lush concentration.

From an iron-rich site just north of the Oakville Crossroad, the 2019 St. Eden boasts effusive aromas of ripe cherries and briary raspberries framed by subtle cedar shadings. Full-bodied, silky, plush and long, this is a terrific all-around effort that deserves a few years in the cellar and should drink well for at least two decades thereafter.

Flamboyant aromas of oak tree, dried flowers, violets and black mushrooms. Full-bodied with juiciness and depth of fruit and acidity. Dusty tannins and such length. Warmth and crushed-stone character. Extremely long and creamy. Firm and intense. This needs five or six years to come around. Try after 2027.

In the same ballpark qualitatively, the 2019 St. Eden comes from a cooler site and volcanic soils. It has a darker, medium to full-bodied, incredibly complex profile that offers abundant cassis-like fruit, notes of graphite, flowers, violets, and tobacco, integrated acidity, polished tannins, and a great, great finish. It’s another singular, incredibly balanced, complete wine from this team. Hide bottles for 4-6 years and enjoy over the following three decades.

A 4.4ha site on a knoll of the valley floor with iron-rich fractured volcanic soils made from 'hillside parent material', says Bob Levy, director of winemaking. Here is a wine that hits so many notes, every one nicely delineated, beginning with savoury black olive and wild herb aromas tinged with vanilla and cedar. The first sip reveals blackberry and red berry fruits, cigar box and minerality. Sculpted tannins etch themselves into the upper palate, while the mid-palate is all crushed stones. A real freshness takes hold through a long finish that hints at crushed coffee beans, turned earth and dried flowers.

Densely packed but defined, with an alluring alder smoke edge, this slowly unwinds the core of steeped plum, blackberry and black currant preserves over a long cast iron spine that drives throughout. Reveals a late flurry of apple wood, bramble and sweet tobacco on the finish. For the cellar.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.
Home to some of the most sought-after Cabernet Sauvignon in America, Napa Valley’s Oakville district stretches across the center of Napa's valley floor and foothills between the Vaca and Mayacamas Mountains. This AVA is home to the legendary To Kalon Vineyard and Martha's Vineyard, as well as many powerhouse wineries including Screaming Eagle, Silver Oak, Robert Mondavi, Opus One, Far Niente and Groth.
The climate is generally warm and agreeable, resulting in year after year of favorable vintages. Summer days see a gentle tug of war between warmer inland air and the cool air coming in from the San Pablo Bay, creating an ideal environment to grow red varieties. Oakville's diverse soils, namely ancient sea bedrock, clay and gravel, are well-drained, and perfect for high-caliber viticulture.
Cabernet here is often bottled varietally but is also popular in Bordeaux Blends. Oakville wines are known for their silky, sensual textures, structured tannins, dark and brooding fruit and lovely aromatics. These age-worthy and prestigious wines are favored by collectors throughout the world.
